The seventh grade art students at Mancelona Middle School will be working on the design of the 54th festival button.  We hope to have the finalists and winner selected by the end of February 2009.  Be sure to check back to see the progress of the competition.

About the Project: Students in the Mancelona Middle School, specifically seventh grade art students, will be providing the button design for the Mancelona Bass Festival. Art teacher, Monica Malbouef has decided that the design contest fits into the seventh grade curriculum perfectly where students have been studying cartooning, collaging and the principles of design. The contest will not only allow students to learn how to create artistic design, they will also be getting the unique opportunity to participate in the community event. Students throughout the seventh grade will have the chance to participate in the competition this year, in future years it will become a permanent part of the art curriculum.

Choosing the Design: Students will be given a blank circular template in which they will need to create a button design based on the guidelines of the contest, which will of course involve the sport of bass fishing. Participants will have the freedom of choosing their medium of choice whether it be paint, colored pencil, oil pastel etc. Once their picture is complete, Mrs. Malbouef will choose the top 25 most successful images. From there a panel of judges made up of Bass Festival committee members, school members and community members will select the top 5 choices to be considered. The top five designs will be scanned onto the computer and made into a digital image to be modified with the festival information added to each. From there the images will be handed over to the Bass Festival committee to select the Grand Prize winner.

The finished buttons will be available for purchase in and around the festival.
